//Experimental Sound Art at San Francisco State University\\

Fall 2006

This course focuses on manipulating sound, space, and instrument through digital audio techniques, installation, and performance.   Instruments will be considered in the widest sense, from microphones and synthesizers to found objects, our bodies, and the surrounding space.

Our primary goal will be to produce original sound works in the form of sketches building towards a final project to be presented to the public in a final show.   Class discussions, critiques, and listenings will concur with hands-on labs demonstrating audio techniques, software (e.g. Audacity, SPEAR, SoundHack, Reason, ProTools) and building of hardware (e.g. contact mics, installing speakers).   We will critique examples and theories in the realms of sound as sound sculpture, acoustic ecology, musique concréte, Deep Listening(TM), fabricated spaces, and aspects of performance art.

//Private Instruction\\

Learn music with a fun, energetic, and experienced teacher!   I have over 8 years experience with students of all ages (ages 3.5 on up through college music instruction and adult students), combining improvisation and composition with a traditional training in the piano and violin.

My sound-based approach focuses on cultivating creative interpretation and musical expression, with a technical core aiming at general musicianship and mastery of your instrument.   Repertory is flexible, and may range from classical-based to more improvisatory and popular musics as per our common goals and your creative interests.

I have performed music all but the first three years of my life, studying classical and contemporary violin and piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music (BA, 2003, Cleveland, Ohio), computer music composition at the Centre Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis (Paris, France), and most recently electronic music (Mills College, MFA, 2006).

Currently I have no availability. Email m@mariplasma.com for more information.

SoundPlay

8 week session begins September 17

An exploration of the soundworld we live in and how we shape it, this class builds beginning musicianship skills for children ages 3.5-6 and their parents.

Utilizing children's ability to learn through play, we will investigate the nature of sound while learning musical concepts with traditional instruments such as keyboards, voice and percussion, as well as technologically-mediated instruments such as microphones and samplers.

Fun With Fiddles

8 week session begins September 17

Combining Suzuki/Classical music, fiddle tunes, and improvisation, we will focus on building ear-training and musicality through group-playing.   For violinists in the early stages of learning the instrument, this course will offer you confidence and new skills on your instrument.   Parents are encouraged to sit-in on classes.

//Recommendations\\

It’d been a while since I experienced the passionate energy of a teacher’s dedication to her profession. I missed not one of
her day-long classes. Every meeting was so much fun, imagination vivified, and creativity aspired. Mari brought the curiosity of a kid out in me to experiment and listen to lots of gadgets.... But most importantly, she created a persistent community to explore and learn. Oh, I’d only wish that I could be in Mari’s class forever!

--N. Wang, student

"Marielle's enthusiasm and passion for music is clear in teaching. As a parent, I especially appreciate that she is able to naturally bond with young children. She has the gift of bringing out the 'musician' in a child with much patience and
creativity."

--Jamie Young, parent

I'm pleased to have the opportunity to most highly recommend Marielle Jakobsons as a music teacher.  She gave beginning piano lessons to my son... Marielle set down a great foundation for Alec's ongoing and intense interest in music... Marielle is a disciplined and creative Teacher and Performer, and I believe she would be a most outstanding addition to the faculty of any school of music.
